2010 National Hammer Dulcimer Champion

So I wanted to let you all know how I got to this point of being the 2010 National Hammer Dulcimer Champion. It was such an amzing thing to watch and be a part of that I wanted to tell the story as quick as I could. i want to keep it concise but also let you know as much as I can becuase it's a great story. So here it goes.

It started when I went to KY and won the state title there which gave me a free pass to the Walnut Valley Folk Fest which has a number of contests all weekend long.

Seven days before we were scheduled to leave for Winfield, KS for the fest, I lost my day job. The day of the job loss was 9/8/10 we received our finished product of the Songs From Walnut Valley CD that same day. It just seemed odd that the news of an era ending was followed so closely with the entry of a new era.

The weekend of the 10th I had 3 different gigs so though the job loss was really hard to take in, I had a lot of support from freinds, family and doing something that I love, music. The following Monday 9/13/10 was really hard to take. I wanted to fall into a dispair but we held firm to the promises of God that He wants us to go "up and not down" and Ps. 1 "everything he does, he prospers." God had some amazing things to teach us if only I would Pray and Obey. One thing that we new for certain was that God had his hands all over us in the midst of it all and that He had, and still has, a blessing for us in the midst of it all.

So we headed off to KS with the plan of not worring about the job situation until we got back from the festival. God had orchastrated everything up to this point, why not follow the path of winning a championship title like we planned.

I'll stop at that and go on from there in the next post. Stay tuned, I know you know how it ends, but getting there is half the fun. Okay, maybe not half, let's just say that it's part of the fun. The rest was winning which was OVER THE TOP. :-)

Ted God Bless you and your family! I have nearly been where you are, but not quite. My company downsized three times. It is a testament to your faith that you have remained hopeful in the Joy of our Lord. I firmly believe that God opens doors. I know he uses those who are prepared! When I was younger I thought I was more prepared for the vicissitudes of life and God's plan. As I've gotten older (just turned 54 three days ago) I feel less so, and that is my fault. You have reiterated to me that I should let neither age nor circumstances dictate my relationship to our Savior. Acts 2 doesn't come along very often. God uses those who prepare themselves for His service. Thank you for your testimony. And congratulations on winning Winfield! I know the story is yet to come. :-)

We've been watching the site for news and are sooooooooo happy for you! Didn't even know you had moved to IN until yesterday. You have been in our prayers that you would perform to the best of your abilities. Even this morning, on the way to school, you were the petition from our 5 year old daughter! Many congratulations and hope to connect when you're in the suburban Chicago area again!

Sue, I hope that you see this in time. We are coming to Aurora this weekend and playing up in Geneva, IL at Graham's 318 7-9 pm downtown Geneva. It's a great chocolate fondue place. Thanks for your prayers and thoughts. I haven't stopped smiling yet. I find myself inadvertently smiling or laughing about the ridiculous nature of the whole thing. I can't wait to tell you of all the other circumstances and blessings of it all. There are so man God moments that I don't always know where to start the story.

Ted & Donna, How God continues to work in and through you is an encouragement to us. Congratulations on winning the championship! We knew you had the ability...and we're excited that God chose to bring honor to Himself by allowing you to take first place in the competition. We look forward to seeing how God will guide you and your family in the future!

Woah, that's crazy timing! Maybe somebody besides your wife wanted to give you a little push? Anyway, I'm so excited by the journey He's taking you on and I can't wait to hear the rest of the story!!!! Blessings to you and your sweet family along the journey!

Ted, I am so excited for you!!! I have the biggest grin on my face. Couldn't be happier. You have worked so hard for the honor and we know the Lord had His hand on you all the way. It's not just the tireless way you've pursued the goal- it's also the way you've blessed others with your music. (I still can't thank you enough for teaching me "Sometimes By Step.") I'll be praying for your new job opportunities. My hubby went through the pains of the company he worked for being bought out twice and being r.i.f.ted. Our time is not His time, suffice to say, but we know our God wants to bless us, and He will show you where to go. Grats again. I am so proud of ya.

Sue, The only show that's open to the public this weekend is the one at Graham's 318 on Friday. The others are private performances. Saturday is a private party for someone and Sunday is for a business that is invite only. I'm sorry, I'd love to see you all on Friday if possible.

Sue, On second thought, I'm not sure if Sunday's show is private. They did say it was an open house, but it's one of those things that I'm playing background music and not a performance, so the mood that I play in is usually altered a bit. I usually take a more easy listening approach rather than full fledged rock 'em sock 'em music. You could probably come up for this and no one would know that you're not from the area.
