3 main goals

Alright, I have to do this even though I'm very sleepy and it's 1:30am. It's not that I have to do this, I want to do this. I love the fact that you have been following me and that you take the time to be part of my life. I don't take that for granted. With all that said, I do have 3 main things going on right now with a whole lot of other small dogs nipping at my heals. So I will try to wrap this all in a nice package that is legible and fun to read. So without further ado, here are the 3 main things that I will be working on in the next month or so:

1. Winning the National Hammered Dulcimer contest.

A year or so ago I had a conversation with a fellow HD player/national champion/friend and we were talking about the possability of doing music for a living with the focus on the hammered duclimer. He said that it could be done but that he thought I would have to win some contests to aid in that goal. He said that it would do several things for me.
  • The first being that it would naturally give me credablility for those that haven't heard of me and the cold calling would come a little easier.
  • Second, that it would give folks confidence in purchasing CDs and other merchandise.
  • Third, that it would improve the profitability of gigs and also give me a lot of national exposure especially if I'm pursuing gigs where other champions like me (my friend) are not.
Now, not that I'm searching for these three things as the end to my mission on earth, but I do want to "do something that I love so that I will not have to work another day in my life".

So I went to Kentucky a few weeks ago and won the state title there.(pause for applause). One of the winnings provided me a free pass to participate in the national compatition. So on September 15th Donna and I will go out to Winfield, KS and spend a long weekend at this folk festival for the express purpose of winning the national title (also to celebrate 13 years of marriage. Our anniversary is on August 30th). Anything less will be a failing that I will have to learn from and then try again. Even if I don't win but I place 2nd or 3rd, my name will start to be out there in the national market. I really, really, really want this!!!

2. Record 4 songs called, "The Winfield Songs"

What I plan to do is to make available a series of songs that I will be playing for the contest. I hope to have these done before the contest so that you will know what I've worked so hard on and you can vote which order you would want me to play them at the contest. I have 2 rounds playing 2 songs each, so I have to play my best first because I can't get to the second round if I don't win the first. The recordings will be solo hammered dulcimer with no other instrumentation. Just pure beauty. Anyway, I let you know when the songs and the poll are available. These songs will at this point be digital download only.

3. Move forward on the Christmas CD

In the midst of all this, I still need to be prepared to hit the Christmas CD with a vengance in September and October. But here is where I still need your help and early support. I'm going to be real honest about what financial goal we would love to reach for the progression of the Christmas CD.

On the Hymns CD we spent 5,000 total on the production and making 1,000 CD's. We would love to have 10,000 for the Christmas CD. This money goes to hiring other musicians like violins, cellos, percussion players and vocalists that would make this CD really stand out. This would give me the chance to just focus on what I do best and that is to play and sing(maybe).

Recently I had the priviledge of meeting a long time idol of mine, Mark Gersmehl of WhiteHeart, who has really befriended me and latched onto the vision that I have for music and my family. He is simply a genius when it comes to music and oh such a talented keyboard player. I want to hire him to produce and to be the main force behind this CD. When I got the chance to play for him, he just smiled and said, "There's a whole lot of passion in that heart of yours." " There's so much that you could do with that and your hammered dulcimer." I'm sure that if money was no object he would do it for free, but anything worth doing isn't free. And it would be so amazing to work with him.

So many of you have given me raving reviews of my Hymns CD and I'm so confident in Mark and my ability that, If I can team up with him, this album will simply be way more awesome. I am simply pumped about this CD and I hope that you can start to see the vision of it as well.

So here's what I've tried to create. I wanted to make this not just another project of mine but a project of ours (yours and mine). On the website I have a New Album page that has preorder options that will help fund the creation of this CD. There are different levels of funding and therefore, bigger reward. The most important one will give you a personal house show for you and your friends or family. This will give you something special for the holiday season and it will give me a chance to put together a tour schedule. Because I don't want to make a CD and then just sit here at home and watch it sell. I want to come and play for you.

These shows do not have to be before Christmas, we could schedule them later in the year if that would work better for you. Order and we'll talk about what would work best for you. I love to do these intimate concerts and I would love to do one for you. If you live in CA or some place a bit on the far reaches of the states, just send me a note and we'll have to talk logistics about gas money and housing, but other than that, the price is what it is.

So, there it is. This what I wanted to do and work on and so I will try. I think that I've said what I've wanted to and I'm too tired to think of anything else. Please leave me a note here or send me an email at ted@tedyoder.com if you have any thoughts about this and or have another suggestion for me to consider. It's like I tell my kids,"There's only one dumb question and that's the one that goes unasked."

I would love your support in all these areas whether it's encouragement or financial. Thank you for your time in reading this, I know that you could be doing something else.

Abundant blessing to you,
Ted

You can do it Ted! You have been blessed with the talent and the drive. Good luck in Kansas. Relax and feel the Lord's pleasure as you play, don't stress out. As my praise band leader always reminds us, we play for an audience of one. One thing I would encourage you to consider doing is showing yourself more in the HD community. Winfield is fantastic. Go to the Swannanoa Gathering or something similar to hang with other HD nuts and get your name/music bandied about by people like Ken Kolodner and Dan Landrum. You have a unique ability with the HD. Blessings, Lynn, aka hmrdulcimer on youtube and spudzilla
